The wealthiest Canadians would have many loopholes to avoid paying the taxes they owed. This is the thesis defended by Brigitte Alepin, chartered accountant and tax specialist, in a book entitled These rich who do not pay taxes.
According to her, thanks in particular to accounting tricks and tax havens, these rich legally succeed not to pay tax, each year, 45 billion Canadian dollars.
Who are they? Cinar, Canada Steamship Lines, Irving Oil, the Chagnon family (Videotron), and even some religious institutions are identified by the author as one of those rich who abuse the Canadian tax system. The tools at their disposal to avoid paying taxes are numerous, but not accessible to the ordinary citizen.
